Bullies mock 5-yr-old, throw him to ground. Then unlikely hero has them running for the hills

Sadly, bullying has become an epidemic in our day and age. People don’t seem to know how to show each other kindness and compassion anymore.

One question I always have when I hear stories of terrible bullying is, “Why didn’t anyone stop it?”

Where are the adults or the brave kids who will step in and stop the cruelty?

In one recent case of bullying, no person stepped in to help. That’s when a furry hero decided it was time to take charge!

Five-year-old Ethan and his 2-year-old brother were playing soccer in their front yard one day when a group of older boys walked by and started harassing them. They yelled in their faces and one of them even shoved Ethan to the ground.

That’s when an unlikely hero suddenly leaped to the boys’ rescue.

Ethan’s mom, Sarah, had recently gotten him a ginger tabby cat named Smudge after his previous cat passed away. The two quickly formed a tight bond. Sarah says Smudge “is more of a brother to the boys than a cat.”

When Smudge saw the bullies hurting his “brothers,” he bounded toward them, hissing and spitting. When that didn’t deter them, Smudge leaped on the chest of the boy who had shoved Ethan and continued to hiss at him.

That did it! The bullies ran off crying, not quite as tough as they had been when they first walked up.

Sarah was shocked by Smudge’s behavior, but also very grateful for it.

“He has never done anything like that before but it was absolutely brilliant seeing him look out for Ethan like that,” she said.

Sarah noted that Smudge has been keeping an extra watchful eye over Ethan ever since the incident.

“He has slept outside his bedroom keeping guard ever since it happened,” she said. “I actually feel so much safer knowing Smudge is around after seeing him defend him like that.”

For his bravery, Smudge was nominated for the National Cat of the Year Award through the Cats Protection Charity. While he didn’t win the top award, in Ethan and Sarah’s eyes he is the winner.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes…and species! We think Smudge has definitely earned the title! Do you?
